Kids' Birthday Party ideas in Christchurch: Your Ultimate Guide

Right. The birthday is approaching, the child has opinions, and somehow you've left it slightly later than intended. Been there. Here's everything I know about the best spots in Christchurch to host a kids birthday party or help you host your own party, from big venues to brilliant entertainers and the classic "hire a hall and make it your own" move.

The Best Kids’ Party Venues

Chipmunks Playland

Papanui (Cranford St) + Wigram (Main South Rd)

Little ones' absolute heaven. An indoor playground and cafe for ages 0-11 with birthday party packages that include favours, food and clean-up. No mess for you. Two Christchurch locations - the Wigram site just had a big renovation and is looking more magical than ever, with neon bubble pits and high-tech challenges. The Papanui spot is a local classic with renos on the way. Either way: no mess, no fuss, kids go home tired and happy. That is the dream.

Laser Strike

Byron St, Sydenham

Genuinely fun even as an adult, this one earns its place on the list for all ages. The newly renovated Laser Strike has a two-storey cyberpunk-themed arena, complete with new Genesis gear - phasers, blasters, protective shields, the works. The glowing UV party rooms are genuinely epic for post-game time, and it's a BYO venue so you can bring whatever food you like or order in pizza from their mates at Pizza Hut (they have dedicated table and areas you can hire for parties). The best bit? You play, you eat, and then you leave - staff handle all the clean-up.

Inflatable World

Waltham (City) + Hornby

Giant bouncy castles, high energy, and kids who come home absolutely exhausted, what more could you want? There are multiple courts including a dedicated Under 5s area, plus a party zone for cake time without total chaos. Two Christchurch locations to choose from. Socks are mandatory (no socks, no play - pack a spare pair, someone always forgets) and sessions run for two hours. Parents are encouraged to get in and bounce too, which is either brilliant or terrifying depending on your vibe.

Game Over

Riccarton

Indoor go-karts, mini golf and a full arcade at Riccarton. The electric go-karts are genuinely thrilling - junior karts for ages 7-12, and full adult karts for the bigger kids (and parents who get competitive) plus mini toddler karts! Mini golf keeps the non-karting crowd happy, and the arcade fills in the gaps nicely. Fully catered birthday parties available with a reserved area and a party host. Important heads-up for the invites: closed shoes are mandatory for the karts - no jandals or open-toed shoes, full stop. Worth spelling this out on the invitation so you're not scrambling on the day.

Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq

EntX, Colombo St, City

This one is properly glam. A circus-themed arcade packed with classic and modern games, ten-pin bowling, dodgem cars, VR rides, and Holey Moley mini golf next door - all under one roof in the city. They also do karaoke rooms and those famous "crazy shakes" (towering ice cream and sweets creations that you absolutely photograph before you drink). Brilliant for older kids and tweens who want to feel like they're having a proper event rather than a standard kids' party. Birthday packages include a reserved area and private host. Note: it becomes 18+ after 8pm so plan to wrap up before then, daytime birthdays here are electric.

Timezone

Christchurch City

An hour at Timezone and kids are fully sorted - arcade games, redemption prizes, and that particular brand of joyful chaos that only a proper arcade delivers. It's more of a "let them loose and follow them around" birthday outing than a structured event, which is sometimes exactly the right energy. Follow it up with lunch at one of the great food spots nearby (or Rollickin gelato) and you've got a brilliant city birthday without much organising required. Perfect for the kid who knows exactly what they want.

Air Force Museum

45 Harvard Ave, Wigram

Genuinely one of the most underrated birthday venues in Christchurch. The Air Force Museum runs fully hosted birthday "missions" - kids zip up a flight suit, grab their dog tags, and get put through themed activities by the museum's programme team. There are packages for different ages: air and sea adventures for preschoolers through to rescue and cadet challenges for older kids. Party bags are included, catering through the cafe is available as an add-on, and museum entry is free for New Zealanders - so guests can explore before and after. Free parking, 15 minutes from the CBD. What's not to love.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

60 Hussey Rd, Harewood

For the animal-obsessed child, this is unbeatable. Willowbank's birthday packages start at $175 for five children ($35 per additional child) and include full reserve entry for all the party kids, a special birthday gift, party food, a bag of animal feed for each child, and complimentary entry for two adults. Kids get to hand-feed alpacas, wallabies, and eels and kiwi - you're right there with them, no glass in the way, which is a genuinely special experience. Parties run at 11am or 2pm so book ahead. BYO cake is totally fine; just leave the balloons at home - they're not allowed in the park.

Pizza party outing

Spagalimis, Winnie Bagoes + more

Sometimes the simplest option is the best one. For older kids, a pizza restaurant outing hits genuinely differently - they feel like they're having a proper grown-up event, the menu basically handles itself, and you barely have to organise anything. Spots like Spaghettini and Winnie Bagoes are solid Christchurch picks with room for a group, and menus that kids actually enjoy. A great option for the age where a "real outing" is more exciting than a party game.

Mona Vale Kids High Tea

Mona Vale

If your child loves the idea of a fancy tea party (princess vibes anyone?), the Kids Tiny Tea at Mona Vale is a birthday party with a delightful twist. Best suited to smaller groups, little guests can sip, nibble, and practice their finest manners over a spread of kids’ high tea (or more likely hot chocolate) with a tower of treats in a beautiful historic house. Afterwards, they can bolt into the gardens and burn off all that excitement, restoring the natural order of things. Ideal for those who enjoy a touch of occasion and an excellent excuse to wear their very best party outfit. This place gets busy on weekends so you’ll want to book well in advance!

Hire a Kids’ Party Space

Hire a hall

Christchurch City Council community halls + local churches

The move if you want to do it exactly your way but don’t want the chaos at home. The Christchurch City Council has a great range of community halls you can book online, everything from small lounges to larger spaces, all at very reasonable rates. Local churches often have halls available too, sometimes at even lower cost. The magic here is what you do with the space: pair it with an entertainer, set up a bouncy castle outside, sort your own catering, and you've got a completely custom party without paying big venue prices. Full flexibility, your rules.

Hire a bouncy castle

Delivery across Christchurch

The classic combo: bouncy castle + backyard = genuinely excellent party. Event Hire (based in Wigram) does delivery, setup and packdown for a fully hands-off experience, or you can collect yourself to save money. Party Hire Christchurch is another option worth a look. One heads-up: CCC community halls generally don't allow bouncy castles indoors, so you'll want a backyard or outdoor space sorted. Outstanding entertainment-per-dollar ratio. Always.

Bring the party to them: Christchurch Party Entertainers

Crowntastic Events

Canterbury-wide - they come to you

If you want the birthday child to have a genuine "I cannot believe this is actually happening" moment, hire Crowntastic. They provide princesses, superheroes and a whole lineup of characters - all performed by properly trained entertainers who stay fully in character throughout. Add on face painting, glitter tattoos, pamper packages or craft activities and you've got a complete party at any venue (including your own backyard). Years of experience, consistently glowing reviews, and packages designed to include everyone - not just princess fans. The kind of birthday kids genuinely talk about for months.

Melanie Poppins

Canterbury-wide -  she comes to you

One of Christchurch's most beloved children's entertainers, and honestly the reviews speak for themselves. Her 1.5-hour party package covers a magic show, music, face painting, bubbles, and - the part that makes every single child in the room completely lose their minds - a meet-and-greet with a real live rabbit. It's a totally self-contained birthday party: you don't need to plan a single activity or run any games. Just show up, let Melanie do her thing, and enjoy the fact that someone else is doing all the work.

Tiny Town + Wild Wanderers

Bring to your venue or backyard

Pair a hired hall or backyard with one of these activity providers and you've got something genuinely different. Tiny Town brings imaginative play setups for little ones - mini town environments that toddlers and preschoolers absolutely disappear into. Wild Wanderers bring nature-based activities to your event, brilliant for curious and outdoorsy kids or anyone who wants something a bit unexpected at a party. Either works beautifully alongside a council hall hire - memorable, flexible, and a step above the usual entertainer format.

Tiny Town create the best set ups for imaginative play!

However you celebrate, the main thing is cake got eaten and the kids went home tired. Mission accomplished. Got a birthday venue or entertainer I've missed? Let me know - I'm always collecting ideas for when the next one inevitably sneaks up on me.
