Best Things to Do on Waiheke Island with Kids

Waiheke might be known for its stunning vineyards and relaxed island vibes, but it’s also an amazing destination for families. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a few nights away, there’s loads to keep little ones happy-and parents relaxed. Here's our roundup of the best family friendly things to do on Waiheke Island with kids:

1. Beachside Playgrounds

Waiheke is full of beautiful beaches, and three of them come with sea-themed playgrounds that make for a perfect family stop.

  • Little Oneroa Beach Playground has a fun playground shaded by trees, picnic tables, and a woodfired pizza truck right in the carpark. There’s a dairy nearby for ice creams, snacks and coffee, and the beach itself is great for a paddle.

  • Palm Beach Playground has a gorgeous grassy area with a large ship-themed playground for endless play, a nearby shop and café, and the kind of quiet white sand bay dreams are made of. Both beaches are accessible by bus and great for a low key morning or afternoon out.

  • Onetangi Playground is about a 5 minute walk up from the beach (the bus stop before you reach the beach), but it’s a great stop either before or after your beach visit. It has a sweet little tin boat kids will love pretending to drive, a sandy area and relaxed vibes. Bonus: Onetangi Beach itself is one of the best on the island - a wide, flat stretch of sand perfect for paddling, running or collecting shells.

2. The HEKE: Pizza, Toys & A Giant Jumping Pillow

Yes, you read that right, a giant jumping pillow. The HEKE is a local favourite for a reason. With four acres of gardens, a relaxed restaurant, brewery and distillery, it’s the perfect combo of grown-up goodness and kid-friendly fun. Kids can bounce, dig in the sandpit, play lawn games, and enjoy a solid kids' menu, while adults can chill with craft beer or sample award-winning whisky or wine. And yes, it’s also on the bus route!

3. Man O’ War Vineyard

If you’ve got a car (and are up for an adventure), Man O’ War beach and vineyard is worth the drive, a bit of a dusty road, to the eastern end of the island. It’s super relaxed, with picnic tables under the trees, a safe little bay right on site, and loads of space for kids to run. Older kids might love their Forest Flight Zipline, set amongst native bush and ideal for a bit of extra thrill.

4. Waiheke Library (Perfect for Rainy Days)

Right in the middle of Oneroa Village, Waiheke’s public library is a total gem. It’s modern, warm, has a lovely children’s area with loads of books, and the all-important clean bathrooms. Great for escaping the rain or just a quiet moment while the kids recharge and do some reading.

5. Island Gelato Company

No family outing is complete without ice cream, and Island Gelato is the spot for it on Waiheke. You’ll find their gelato cart in Oneroa opposite the library, and the flavours are next level (for kids and grown ups).

6. Mudbrick Vineyard (Luxury But Kid-Friendly)

Mudbrick is known for its fine dining and gorgeous French countryside feel, but head to the casual rooftop terrace just above the Bistro and you’ll find a surprisingly family-friendly space. There’s room for kids to run amongst the garden and little hill, and stunning views back to the Auckland skyline. Order a casual bite and a glass of wine (and a lemonade for the kids) at the walk-up bar and soak it all in, they’ll love it!

7. Beach Time (Obviously!)

Waiheke’s beaches are world class (we almost want to keep it a secret), and there’s something for every family:

  • Oneroa Beach is beautiful and central, with swings and picnic tables along the beach which is down the hill from all the shops and cafes. While it's often filled with boats, it's great for a stroll or a paddle.

  • Palm Beach is quieter and perfect for swimming.

  • Onetangi Beach is long, flat and lined with great family-friendly restaurants, ideal for a play and paddle.

  • Shelly Beach (on the north side) is super calm, sheltered, and you might even spot a stingray!

8. More Vineyards for the Whole Family

Not all vineyards are off-limits for kids! Places like Bach Vineyard, Casita Miro and Stonyridge offer casual food, outdoor dining, and space for kids to explore between the vines and olive trees and both set in rolling countryside. You’ll need a car for some of the more rural spots, but the views and relaxed atmosphere are worth it.

9. Wild on Waiheke

A great option if you're looking to mix grown-up fun with kid-friendly space to roam. Adults can enjoy wine or beer tasting while kids can try archery (supervised), lawn games, and run wild in the open space. Best suited to school-aged kids, but toddlers will still enjoy the freedom to explore.

10. Nature Walks & Bush Adventures

For little explorers who love to climb, stomp, and pretend sticks are magic wands, Waiheke has a great selection of family-friendly bush walks. Some are short loops, others lead to hidden bays or lookout points (or as we like to call them: snack stops). Perfect for burning off energy and guaranteeing a solid bedtime.

Final Tip:

Most of Waiheke’s best spots are accessible by bus, but if you’re planning to explore the far ends of the island or more rural vineyards, hiring a car is your best bet, especially with kids in tow!
