Auckland’s best fenced playgrounds

If you’ve ever tried to hold a conversation at an unfenced playground while your toddler makes a break for the carpark, this list is for you!

Auckland is home to plenty of fully fenced playgrounds, where your little escape-artists can play safely and you can take a breath.

We’ve rounded up the best, as recommended by local parents and caregivers.

Bunnings and Mitre10, various locations

Most Bunnings and Mitre 10 stores have fully fenced playgrounds that are perfect for preschoolers. They’re almost always located right next to a café, too (hello, hot coffee!).

Central Park, Papakura

This playground is a hit with both little ones and older kids. The fenced play area is ideal for preschoolers, while the surrounding open green space is great for older children to kick a ball or have a run around. There’s shade and picnic tables, making it a good spot for a quick visit or a full day out.

Address: 57 Wood Street, Papakura

Toilets: Yes, though not always well maintained

Eastern Beach Playground, Howick

This fully fenced playground is located right across the street from Eastern Beach. There’s plenty of grassy space and mature shady trees for picnics, plus toilets and a water fountain. The playground itself is compact but has everything kids love — a slide, swing, tunnel, climbing frame, monkey bars, and more.

Address: 34 The Esplanade, Eastern Beach

Toilets: Yes, near the park entrance

Grey Lynn Community Centre, Grey Lynn

There’s a great fully fenced playground around the back of Grey Lynn Community Centre, which is open to the public. There’s also astro turf for crawling babies and a big deck to sit on.

Address: 510 Richmond Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021

Toilets: Yes

Hyde Park Playground, Paerata Rise

This is an awesome playground for transport-loving kids. There’s a cool little wooden train, plus planes, a truck, and horses. It’s especially great in the summer, as there’s a shaded picnic area with several picnic tables.

Address: 10/16 Tabernacle Street, Karaka

Toilets: No

Jean Sampson Reserve, Northcote Point

This fenced playground has actually won awards, and it’s easy to see why. There are balance beams, a slide, swings, a sandpit area, a cool little fire truck, and even a basketball half-court. There’s also toilets, a drinking foundation, and picnic tables.

Address: 25 Queen Street, Northcote Point

Toilets: Yes, right next to the playground

Lake Town Green, Hauraki

If you have toddlers, they will love this spot! It’s fully fenced with a sandpit, swings, and slide. There are often bikes and scooters left by other families for kids to enjoy on the path that goes around the play area. Plus, there’s a decent-sized grassy area for kicking a ball around.

Access: Corner of Jutland Road and Sydney Street, Hauraki

Toilets: Yes, within the park

Madills Farm Children’s Playground, Kohimarama

This has to be one of the best fully fenced playgrounds in Auckland! It has play equipment to suit all ages, including several slides, mini trampolines, climbing webs, swings, and a big climbing frame. It’s also right next to a big green space.

Address: 6 Baddeley Avenue, Kohimarama

Toilets: Yes, at the end of the car park near the sports fields

Mairangi Bay Playground

Located on Sidmouth Street, this is a great playground for young kids, with the high street on one side (with shops and cafés) and the beach on the other. The playground itself takes up about half of the fenced area — the rest is a big grassy space, ideal for picnics or just letting the kids roam free. There’s also a cute little book exchange across the road, which often has some nice kids books.

Address: 2 Sidmouth Street, Mairangi Bay

Toilets: Yes, across the street

Millwater Park Playground, Millwater

Also known as Botanical Drive Playground, this is a great spot for all ages, but most suited to toddlers and preschoolers. It’s quite a suburban playground, with shade and picnic tables, as well as a network of paths for kids on wheels.

Address: 2 Botanical Drive, Millwater

Toilets: No

Panmure Basin Playground

This is a good, basic fenced playground, best suited to preschoolers and younger primary aged kids. It’s on the Panmure Basic Walkway (along with a few other playgrounds, and miniature trains), so it’s a nice stop if you’re doing the walk.

Address: 100 Ireland Road, Mount Wellington

Toilets: Yes, by the car park

Rānui Domain Playground

This playground has recently been upgraded — it’s now four times larger than the old playground that was there! There are loads of accessible play features, as well as a small water play area. It’s within Rānui Domain, which is a huge green space with sportsfields, fitness equipment, and a network of paths (great for teaching kids to ride bikes).

Access: 54A Swanson Road, Rānui

Toilets: Yes, next to the carpark

Te Pua / Keith Park, Weymouth

As Auckland’s first fully accessible playground, Te Pua / Keith Park is something special. It’s wheelchair friendly, designed for kids of all abilities, and has a communication signboard. The views over Manukau Harbour are pretty stunning, too!

Address: 20 Roys Road, Weymouth

Toilets: Yes, by the playground

Virginia Reserve Playground, Eden Terrace

This is such a cool, hidden gem in central Auckland, recognisable for its awesome tuatara statue. It’s located off Ian McKinnon Drive, and great for preschoolers.

Address: 55 Virginia Avenue West, Eden Terrace

Toilets: No
