Spring has officially landed in the garden city, which means it’s time to drag everyone out of the house before cabin fever sets in. We all know spring in Christchurch is a mixed bag - one day we’re blessed with glorious, T-shirt-wearing sunshine and the next day it’s sub-zero with horizontal rain.

So to keep your sanity intact these holidays, here are 10 top-tier school holiday activities across the city, ranging from tactical outdoor missions to indoor energy burn-offs (and lots of them are free!):

1. The Arts Centre (Te Matatiki Toi Ora)

If you want one central spot that hits every demographic, the Arts Centre has gone all out for the holidays. They’ve put together an entire lineup of free activities, ticketed concerts, workshops, and family movie sessions at Lumière Cinema (including one of my favourite movies ever made, Alice in Wonderland). Some of the activities include FREE cardboard lollipop decorating (and then swap it for a real one at the Lolly Shop - peak strategy), mini-figure hunt in the Teece Museum, fudge shape decorating, plus art and craft activities you can book in. The food situation is great too - acai bowls at Aury, food trucks, brunches at Quad, snacks and coffee at Frances Nation and macarons at the new Grace Patisserie. 2. Baby Animal Spotting at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Spring equals baby animals, making Willowbank an absolute non-negotiable right now. The gorgeous little lambs have arrived, the weather is finally warming up, and the path is an easy stroll. You can feed the farm animals, watch the monkeys and capybaras cause chaos, and quietly spot the elusive kiwi in the nocturnal house. Their on site cafe is fantastic too (heated pretzel is our fave).

3. The Quail Island Pirate Treasure Hunt

The legendary Quail Island pirate hunt trip is back, and if your kids are into full-immersion roleplay, this is your winner (go full costume, why not). Legend has it a pirate’s treasure was lost on the island long ago. Six posters are hidden across the terrain, each depicting a piece of lost loot. Grab your Treasure Map on the ferry over, trek the island, locate all six posters, and hand in your completed map to the crew to claim actual pirate gold (chocolate coins, but to a six year old it’s real currency).

The Logistics: $34 for adults, $20 for kids. Book online here, park at Lyttleton and pack plenty of water, heavy duty snacks and good walking shoes.

4. "The Wildologist's Missing Notebook" Trail at the Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens interactive hunt is back for spring with a brand new free nature themed clue trail: The Wildologist’s Missing Notebook. Head into the Visitor Centre at the gardens (by Ilex) to pick up your free booklet. This one is slightly more complex and tailored toward school aged kids, which is a massive win if your older ones usually complain that treasure hunts are "too babyish." It’s completely doable for younger ones with a bit of parental navigation, and let’s be honest: kids always walk twice as fast when there’s a mission involved. Bring a pencil!

5. Halswell Quarry Picnic & Exploration

On a clear, sunny spring day, Halswell Quarry is unmatched. Pack a rug, load up the pram, and set up on the lawns. If you forget treats, there’s a small coffee kiosk open 7 days a week for caffeine, hot chocolates and emergency snacks.

For Older Kids: The Rim Walk offers incredible views and actual exercise.
For Little Ones: Explore the Sister City gardens, spot the statues, and cross the mini wooden bridges over the streams.
Bonus Playgrounds: Need to burn off the last 10% of their energy before the car ride home? Quarry View Playground and River Stone Playground are both just a 5 minute drive from the main gates.

6. The New Spring Sweet Treat Crawl

The Christchurch foodie scene has had a glorious glow up recently, and the school holidays are the perfect excuse for a sweet treat mission (parents too).

Okioki (Victoria St): Incredible pastries and pies, next-level cookies, a spacious layout, and an toy box to buy you 10 minutes of peace while you drink hot coffee.
Velvet Treats (Riccarton Rd): Fresh waffles and crepes loaded with pistachio cream, Nutella, melted chocolate and more.
Secret Bakers (St Asaph St): Located across from Little High, a takeaway spot serving massive, stuffed cookies.
Wooden Spoon Biscuits (New Regent St): Freshly baked, warm cookies served right in the heart of town on our favourite colourful street.
Sip n Dip: A new one has just popped up in Shirley but they’re also in Hornby and the CBD (across from South City). Delicious acai bowls, soft serve desserts, chocolatey crepes and more.

7. Running Grid

For those unavoidable freezing or rainy spring days when everyone is bouncing off the walls, Grid is the ultimate indoor circuit breaker. You book a private game room where the entire floor is made of LED light tiles. Choose your difficulty level, step only on the green and blue tiles, and jump over the moving red tiles. It is literally a real life game of "The Floor is Lava," complete with high energy music. Bonus: it’s an absolute cardio workout for adults (a mix of a workout class and being back in the club in 2010). Prepare to get competitive.

8. Jurassic Adventure

Did you know your child can ride an actual moving dinosaur right here in Christchurch? Because they can, and it will basically make you Parent of the Year. Aside from riding animatronic dinos, kids can dig for dinosaur fossils in the sand pits, navigate a wooden maze populated by moving raptors, and play a full round of mini golf surrounded by prehistoric giants. It’s an easy morning or afternoon outing that dino-obsessed kids (aren’t they all?) will talk about for weeks.

9. Tiny Town (Mobile Role Play)

If you haven't experienced Tiny Town yet, it is peak entertainment for the under 7 crowd. It’s a full role-play village built entirely for young imaginations.The setup features educational mini-booths including a supermarket, post office, vet clinic, construction site, and a brand new florist - where kids can dress up, shop, work, and pretend play to their heart's content.

Important Note: They are running a limited number of sessions over these holidays and tickets vanish quickly, so book your slot ASAP.

10. City Tram Spring Scavenger Hunt

Hop on the iconic city tram for the ultimate tourist-in-your-own-city day out. Between 26 September and 11 October, kids can pick up a free Spring Scavenger Hunt map directly from the Tram Ticket Office. It gives the kids a focus as you loop through the central city, hopping on and off at spots like the Botanic Gardens, Riverside Market and New Regent Street.

Pro-Tip on Passes: If you live locally, look into the Annual Tram & Gondola Pass ($99 Adult / $40 Child / $240 Family). If you use it twice in a year, it pays for itself - and it gives you unlimited tram rides PLUS Gondola trips for 12 months when you need an emergency weekend plan.

11. Teddy Bears Picnic & Mini Explorer Tours at Riccarton House

If you're looking for something sweet and low-key for the smaller humans, Riccarton House is running two family sessions during the holidays.

Friday Storytime (Fri 2nd Oct, 10:30am - 11:00am): Pack your favorite soft toy and a gold coin donation for a Teddy Bears Picnic story session with Tracey, complete with songs, bubbles, rhymes, and a healthy dose of age appropriate chaos.
Mini Explorer Tours: A chance for younger kids to wander through the historic house, hear fun stories, and hunt for hidden details tucked away in the rooms.
The Post Tour Plan: Pop into The Quarters for a coffee and a hot chocolate or a fluffy, then hit the native bush loop, the newly upgraded walkway is short, flat, and ideal for little legs.

12. The Ultimate Playground Crawl (via the Roam App)

Think of this as a pub crawl, but for kids. Christchurch has had a massive boom in brand new, top-tier playgrounds over the last couple of years, many of which are grouped within a 5-minute drive of each other. Pick a suburban zone, pack a thermos, and hit three or four new spots back-to-back. If you need help mapping out fresh turf, download the Roam app, it features an interactive map complete with photos, facility breakdowns (like shade, fences, and nearby coffee), and honest descriptions so you don't show up to a single lonely swing.
