The Best Paddling Pools and Splash Pads in Christchurch

By Kate from @christchurchwithkids

Nothing says Kiwi summer like letting the kids loose in a paddling pool. Luckily, Christchurch has plenty of spots to cool off - whether you’re after a proper paddling pool, a splash pad or just somewhere to let the kids burn energy outside your house (because let’s be real, that’s half the goal). Here’s my roundup of the best paddling pools and splash pads in Christchurch - don’t forget to pack the towels, sunscreen, water and snacks! The best part? It’s a free activity the kids will love!

Scarborough Park, Sumner Beach

A splash pad right next to the beach? You betcha. Scarborough Park ticks all the boxes - partly shaded, fun rainbow-themed water play, and a huge modern playground right next to it. Plus, it’s dangerously close to an ice cream shop and a café, so you’re basically sorted for an entire morning or afternoon. And let’s not forget the epic beach views while the kids splash - honestly, it’s hard to beat.

Why it’s great: Playground, splash pad, beachside location and snacks nearby.

Botanic Gardens, City Centre

If you want a classic, old-school paddling pool experience, this is the spot. In what is probably the biggest paddling pool in Christchurch, this one has a mini slide in the middle and a bonus shallow pool next to it for the littlest ones.. It’s right next to a great playground, and there are tonnes of shaded picnic spots around, making it perfect for a longer stay. There’s also a kiosk nearby for snacks and drinks.

Why it’s great: Massive pool, great for all ages, shady picnic spots and a playground right there.

Margaret Mahy Playground, City Centre

Christchurch’s coolest and most impressive playground also comes with a splash pad and water play area, which makes sense because kids want everything in one place. They can run between climbing, sliding, and splashing while you attempt to keep up. There’s free parking nearby (just don’t push your luck with the time limits), and if you need a snack break, there’s usually a coffee or ice cream truck nearby - absolute lifesaver.

Why it’s great: The ultimate all-in-one play destination, plus easy parking.

Avebury Park, Richmond

This one is right next to Christchurch’s newest little playground, so if the kids aren’t completely exhausted from the paddling pool, they’ll definitely be after the swings. There’s plenty of shade, a ramp going into the pool, and a few tables and chairs inside the gated area - which makes it feel a bit more relaxed for parents too. The real bonus? Riverlution Café is just next door in the community gardens, so you can grab a treat afterwards.

Why it’s great: Partly shady, fully gated, next to a new playground and café treats nearby.

New Brighton Beachside Playground, New Brighton

If your kids love a good seaside adventure, this is a must. The cool waka-themed playground made from sustainable timber is already a win, but throw in a splash pad and being right at the beach, and you’ve got a full day out. Let them run wild on the playground, cool off in the splash area, and then maybe head to the beach… if you’re up for the sand commitment.

Why it’s great: Beach + playground + water play = ultimate energy burner.

Abberley Park, St Albans

This one’s more low-key but super charming. Think mini rose garden, two playgrounds, some shade, and a relaxed gated paddling pool where kids can splash without it feeling like total chaos. If you’re after a chilled-out option, this is a great pick.

Why it’s great: Quiet, pretty setting, great for smaller kids, and plenty of places to sit and relax.

Edgar MacIntosh Park, Bryndwr

A gated paddling pool with some shade, plus a playground for all ages, makes this one a solid go-to. It’s next to a big field, so if you’ve got older kids who want to kick a ball around while the little ones splash, it’s an easy win.

Why it’s great: Gated pool, fun playground, and lots of open space.

Woodham Park, Linwood

Possibly one of the cutest parks in Christchurch, Woodham Park has a fully fenced paddling pool, a colourful playground, and even little bird aviaries (gorgeous, colourful ones!). The whole place is surrounded by trees, so it’s got a really nice, tucked-away feel.

Why it’s great: Shady, relaxed, has birds (!), and a great play area.
