ten Things to do in Christchurch with Kids This Winter

Right, let’s be honest. Winter in Christchurch is beautiful, but it’s also freezing. Whether you’ve just landed in Ōtautahi for a family holiday or you’re a local parent whose kids have already turned the couch cushions into an obstacle course, you need a plan. Winter parenting requires an elite containment strategy. It’s time to wrap the kids up like little burritos, grab a great coffee and hit the town. Here are 10 epic winter-approved days out that will keep the kids entertained and your sanity safely intact.

1. The Culture Duo: Canterbury Pop-Up Museum + Christchurch Art Gallery

If you want to feel like an educated, cultured parent while secretly just seeking free indoor heating, this duo is elite.

The Canterbury Museum Pop-Up: It’s packed with various rotating exhibits throughout the year, plus the classic animal displays, the vintage snowmobile, and treasures from the original museum. Bonus: excellent cafe for treats at the entrance.

Christchurch Art Gallery: Located just around the corner. Head straight to the front area for the interactive kids' zone featuring epic magnet play and comfortable seats for adults. Once they’ve burnt through that, wander the galleries to look at cool exhibitions with the older kids. Their gift shop has the COOLEST toys too, and Doubles cafe across the road does an incredible coffee.

2. The Sky Containment Unit: The Christchurch Gondola

Trap them in a glass box in mid-air where they can’t touch anything breakable. Brilliant. The Gondola features a cosy cafe at the summit, panoramic views of the snowy Alps and Lyttelton Harbour, and the "Time Tunnel" mini-ride detailing local history.

Local Parenting Hack: If you live here, do not buy a casual ticket. Get the Annual Pass for $99. It includes unlimited Gondola and Tram rides for a year. Since under-5s are free, it breaks down to about $1.90 a week to have a premium rainy day escape button in your back pocket.

3. The "Everyone Wins" Lunch Spot: Riverside Market

Trying to feed multiple children with vastly different culinary demands in the winter cold is a form of psychological warfare. Enter Riverside Market. You can find a cosy spot upstairs out of the wind and let everyone get exactly what they want, whether that's pizza, sushi, burgers, gourmet pies, something a bit more healthy or international cuisine. Plus, the sheer volume of sweet treats and dessert stalls downstairs acts as excellent bribery for good behavior.

4. The Feral Energy Burner: Crisp Sumner Beach Walk

Hear me out: a sunny, crisp winter day at the beach is actually elite - we’re lucky enough to not often get those rough winds like Wellington. Layer them up in their thickest jackets and beanies and head to Sumner for a brisk walk, let them loose on the excellent playground, then immediately reward your own bravery with a decadent hot chocolate at one of the beachside cafes.

5. The Deep Freeze Thaw: Hot Pools & Indoor Splashing

When the winter chill gets into your bones, it’s time to submerge the family in warm water. You have three brilliant options depending on your vibe:

  • He Puna Taimoana (New Brighton Hot Pools): Right on the beach, beautifully warm, and perfect if you want a slightly more aesthetic, relaxing soak.

  • Parakiore Wellbeing Centre: Head to the massive new complex in the city center for a state-of-the-art indoor swim.

  • QEII Pools: The ultimate destination for indoor waterslide fun and hydrotherapy, plus there’s a massive playground just across the park if they still have energy left to burn post swim.

6. The Indie Day Trip: Lyttelton

Head through the tunnel for a change of scenery. Lyttelton in winter feels like a moody little seaside village straight out of a BBC drama. Grab some hot drinks and cabinet treats from a local cafe or pizza for lunch (there are some fantastic pizza spots), walk up to the playground (which boasts a seriously cool view of the port), and watch the massive cargo ships and tugboats cruise through the harbor.

7. The Proper Winter Experience: International Antarctic Centre

If it’s going to be freezing anyway, you might as well go the whole hog. Head out towards the airport to experience a literal indoor Antarctic storm, explore a real ice igloo, and hang out with the insanely cute rescued little blue penguins. Kids who hit the height requirement can ride the bumpy Hägglund all-terrain vehicle, and meet the resident huskies. It’s fully indoor, deeply engaging, full of learning and easily takes up a whole morning.

8. Playground Roulette: Find a New One

Christchurch has had a ridiculous number of incredible new playgrounds pop up over the past year. Instead of going to the same old local park, turn it into an adventure. Fire up the ROAM with Kids app, scroll through the map to find a cool new playground you haven’t visited yet (complete with photos and descriptions so you know exactly what to expect), and map out a plan. The only rule? It must finish with a trip to a nearby cafe for a hot chocolate or a fluffy.

9. The Dark Academia Escape: The Arts Centre

The Gothic Revival architecture here gives pure Harry Potter vibes, which is the exact aesthetic you want on a moody winter day. It’s mostly indoors and has a surprising amount of hidden gems for families. You can explore the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities, check out the hands on science exhibits at Rutherford’s Den, make a mandatory stop at the sweet shop and the fudge shop, and finish up at the gorgeous Lumiere Cinema to catch a boutique family movie.

10. The Ultimate Free Indoor Survival Ground: Tūranga (Central Library)

If you haven't spent a rainy winter morning on the dedicated children's floor (Tūhuratanga) at our central library, you are missing out on the greatest free parenting hack in the city. It is perfectly heated, beautifully designed, and features a massive activity zone with giant Lego pits, interactive digital touch screens, reading nooks and craft tables. You can easily park up for two hours, let them play, and grab a premium coffee and a 10/10 cheese scone from the cafe downstairs to fuel your morning.
