10 Uniquely Christchurch Things to Do with Kids (That Aren’t Your Average Playground Trip)

If you think you’ve “done” Christchurch, think again. From a secret cave to a snowstorm and a castle, here are some of the most uniquely Christchurch experiences for families that are equal parts fun and “how cool is that?” for those days when you have no idea to go.

1. Experience Antarctica Without Leaving the City

Head to the International Antarctic Centre near the airport, where you can brave a snowstorm, meet real-life penguins and pretend you’re a very committed polar explorer. There’s also an icy storm to experience, snow, a 4D movie and the world’s most adorable rescue huskies. It’s educational and fun.

2. Fly a Mosquito Jet (Kind Of)

At the Air Force Museum, entry is completely free but if you fancy a little extra thrill, you can try the Mosquito Jet flight simulator for a small fee (around $8). There’s loads to explore, from interactive displays to giant aircraft you can walk through, and plenty of “dad facts” to keep the grown-ups entertained too.

3. Visit a Real(ish) Castle

Perched in the hills of Cashmere, the Sign of the Takahe looks like something straight out of a fairytale complete with turrets, stained glass, and even a knight in armour if you look closely. Grab a coffee and scone inside, and let the kids live out their best prince and princess dreams (no actual crowns or costumes required, though strongly encouraged). They also have tables and a lawn out the back for sunny days.

4. Wander Through a Cave at Sumner Beach

Because nothing says “adventure” like a mysterious seaside cave. Most of the time (but safest at low tide), you can walk straight through the Cave Rock tunnel from one side of the beach to the other. If your kid has never walked through a cave before, this will blow their mind.

5. Hop on a Vintage Tram Ride

See Christchurch CBD from a different perspective - aboard a charming heritage tram. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another era (one where people actually said “good morning” to each other). It’s a great way to explore the city centre, and kids love ringing the bell. Bonus: parents get to sit down.

6. Feed a Giraffe at Orana Wildlife Park

Christchurch’s very own safari experience - no long-haul flight required. You can hand-feed giraffes at the public feeding times, get up close to lions, and see gorillas and cheetahs all in one day. It’s easily one of the most memorable family days out in town.

7. Stroll Through a Jungle in the City

Riccarton Bush is like a little pocket of wilderness in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Towering ancient native trees, chirping birds and a brand new walkway (opening November 2025) that makes you feel like you’re miles from civilisation. Afterwards, wander straight out to Riccarton House for a coffee and cake in a beautiful old homestead café. You’ll feel very wholesome.

8. Go on a boat adventure to Quail Island or Diamond Harbour

Hop on a ferry from Lyttelton and explore this fascinating little island that once housed shipwrecks and quarantine stations, and often does themed hunts during school holidays. Or for a cheaper and quicker option, hop over to Diamond Harbour for a walk up the hill to the old cottage, playground and two cute cafes. Both are great family walks with beautiful views - and you might even spot some dolphins on the boat ride.

9. Step Back in Time at Ferrymead Heritage Park

If your kids think “the olden days” means 2007, this place is a revelation. Old trams, vintage shops and even a collection of old firetrucks, it’s like walking through history. Some weekends have live demonstrations, tram rides, steam train rides and food markets too.

10. Ride a Kayak Through the Botanic Gardens

Sure, you’ve walked the Gardens, but have you paddled through them? Hire a kayak from The Boatshed, pop a life jacket on the kids (I took my daughter age 1!), and explore the Avon River. It’s peaceful, scenic, and ends perfectly with a hot chocolate at the Boatshed Café.
